CHALLENGES
The Villas at the Grand Floridian are Disney vacation club rentals. The style of the new building had to relate to the existing Grand Floridian Hotel next door. This project had many design challenges. These included themed lighting to match the Victoria motif of both buildings. In addition, designing a 5-star feeling hotel on a quick schedule and tight budget was difficult. In addition to typical guest rooms, 6 Grand Villas were designed for larger groups.
INSIGHTS
In order to match the essence of the existing Grand Floridian Hotel, much focus was placed on the quality of light (both color rendering and color temperature). Where budget allowed, we wanted to use LED fixtures both for ease of maintenance and energy savings.
RESULTS
Visitors are greeted at the Porte Cochere with a Victorian Era custom chandelier that we designed in-house. The white surfaces of the lobby glow with even illumination. The centerpiece of the lobby is a fountain featuring characters from Mary Poppins. This is lit from accent lights in the 6 story atrium above, whose space is filled with two elaborate chandeliers. Corridors are lit with alternating wall sconces and art lights. Typical rooms and Grand Villas are adorned with decorative fixtures, lighted coves as well as ambient light provided by downlights.
