  • CHALLENGES

GWA was approached to help with the renovation of the Trump Taj Mahal boardwalk facade in Atlantic City, NJ.  The original sparse floodlighting scheme (from 1990) was in disrepair and the approach flattened the intricate themed elements.   The budget was limited and needed to be applied across the entire 3-block long façade.  In addition the environment was difficult given the salt air and potential for vandal abuse at ground level.  A durable, efficient, cohesive look was important to the design team to reinforce the property identity across the long facade.

  • INSIGHTS

We wanted to keep the property’s iconic identity while revitalizing the facade.  Part of the task at hand also involved refurbishing existing fixtures that had been damaged, weathered and broken. The pier mount lanterns would be removed repaired and recast as needed to restore them to better than new condition.  Decorative pole lights were heavily pitted from the salt air and needed to be stripped, recoated/painted and rewired.  Instead of the generic floodlighting, GWA chose to highlight key elements along the facade.  In addition, we wanted to bring kinetic elements of changing color and sparkle to draw excitement and attention fitting for a Boardwalk Casino Facade.

  • RESULTS

A detailed, cohesive, exciting façade was created across this long beachfront property.  All color changing light fixtures at domes and roof elements were tied together to a single dmx control system to allow changes for events, seasons or otherwise.  White light features work as subtle accent to create a glow for cornices , subtle wallwashing or as outlines for the middle eastern shapes.  At the main entrance, new white LED nodes were installed around the new signage.  These nodes are individually addressable to create sparkle effects throughout the night drawing attention to the entry and hinting to the excitement inside the casino.  Together with the revitalized decorative fixtures, all of the additional lighting uses 25% less power than the previous design.   GWA Lighting conceived the new design, fixture selections and programming choices for the project from start to finish.
